9 Classic American Details For A Historically Accurate Home

Classic American details stand the test of time. A specialty for the Griffiths Construction team, we borrow architectural details from distinguished homes that helped to build the communities we live in today.

“We are the artists that execute the architecture. We do the things that people think don‘t get done anymore. ” – Bob Griffiths

Classic American interior work is in the details. Period replication happens when you build historically correct homes with historically correct features and materials.

When working with classic American details, Griffiths Construction utilizes specialized, custom design details to create a flawless classic American feel for your home. Along with custom lighting, cabinetry, and staircases, below, we have highlighted design details that can be incorporated when building a home using these classic American features.

  1. Deep Window Sills

While this is for structural integrity as well as a place to put decorative items, deep window sills give the opportunity to intensify the classical interior design theme.
  2. Fireplace Surrounds

Our team will build a Rumford fireplace with a herringbone brick firebox –– taller and more shallow than the modern fireplace. This fireplace will easily reflect heat back into the room, creating an authentic fireplace experience.
  3. Ornamental Plaster Ceilings, Cornice, Ceiling Medallions, and Crown Moulding

These details will take each room to a new level. These decorative details were used to project ”high style” within classic American homes.
  4. Venetian Plaster

Venetian plaster, used for centuries, mimics the effect of natural stone. This plaster is smooth to the touch, but provides a unique visual texture.
  5. Hand Carved Millwork

Originally the work of craftsmen, true millwork comes from hand carved wood products that allow for distinctive profiles for each room’s mouldings, trim, and more.
  6. Faux Painting

Using textures you would recognize, faux painting replicates the looks of real materials (marble, wood, stone, etc.), giving your walls more visual depth.
  7. Architectural Bronze Windows

Architectural bronze windows provide a luxurious look and feel for both the interior and exterior of the home. This durable choice will age gracefully and resist corrosion.
  8. Belgian Block Walkways

Historical Belgian blocks are a long lasting option for walkways and driveways. It can be used as an accent (as shown in the image above) or to create the entire pathway. These are rough cut stones that will create a natural and grand entry (or exit) to the home.
  9. Architectural Arches

One of the most classical forms of architecture –– this architectural element has strength like no other. Arches serve a functional purpose while adding beautiful and intricate detail.

Our remarkable team of architects and interior designers help us to create end results that are nothing short of phenomenal. The Griffiths’ team expertise in historically accurate, classical design is yet another element that separates us from the rest.
